Alberta XL Foods plant cleared by FSIS

The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service notified the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on Friday the XL Foods plant in Alberta is cleared to export meat to the U.S. effective immediately.

The plant was shut-down on September 27th after an E.coli contamination prompted the largest meat recall in Canadian history. The source of the contamination was found and corrected, the plant was sanitized and management was taken over by the U.S. division of JBS SA. The plant reopened last month under increased supervision from CFIA.

JBS has an option to buy the plant.
