Vilsack: Ag exports at risk with no 5-yr farm bill

U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the strong fiscal year of ag exports that just ended and the projected record year of exports this year are because of the great work of U.S. producers and cooperators in countries that buy our quality, affordable products.

But, Vilsack tells Brownfield Ag News that without a five-year farm bill, ag exports are threatened.

“Come January,” says Vilsack, “We would probably be in a position where we would not be able to do at USDA the kind of advocacy and kind of support for exports that we’ve done in the past and that could jeopardize those numbers and, in turn, could jeopardize the jobs that are supported by exports. So, it’s not just farm income it’s also nearly a million jobs that are at risk here.”

Vilsack says that’s a major reason why USDA is so insistent on getting the farm bill done.
