Russia’s WTO accession has limited advantage for U.S.

After 18 years of negotiation, Russia acceded late in the summer to membership in the World Trade Organization making official their membership in that trading body. It’s to result in Russia lowering its import duties creating some trade advantages for many countries. There reportedly hasn’t been a large influx of foreign products. In an interview with Brownfield Ag News earlier this year, Chief U.S. Ag Negotiator Isi Siddiqui talked about what was at that time Russia’s anticipated WTO accession. He also discussed the so-called Jackson-Vanik amendment preventing the U.S. from granting Russia permanent normal trade relations status. That provision applies because of some of Russia’s emigration restrictions.
