House Ag members urge work on farm bill

A number of House Ag committee members have taken to the House floor upon their return last week, calling for immediate action on the languishing farm bill that has yet to be debated.

Representative Tim Johnson of Illinois (R) said farmers in his district are some of the most productive and efficient in the world and without a new safety net – Illinois farmers and ALL farmers “are facing uncertainty and possibly dire consequences.” Johnson says inaction will affect everyone, not just farmers.

Connecticut Congressman Joe Courtney (D) warned that the nation could face $7 dollar-a-gallon milk if a farm bill isn’t passed. He said House leadership must bring the bill to the floor for a vote – that already dairy farmers are dealing with record input costs and a market that has collapsed.

As everyone in ag knows, the Senate passed its farm bill this past summer – Senator Kent Conrad of North Dakota said the House must pass a bill promptly because “times is not on our side right now.” The longer it takes, he says, the worse the final bill could be for farmers and ranchers.
