Monsanto donating more money to drought affected counties

In response to the drought, Monsanto’s philanthropic arm is expanding its America’s Farmers Grow Communities program in effected counties.

“So in all the counties that have been declared disasters by the USDA, the Monsanto Fund is going to double the donations, so that farmer will receive two donations of $2,500 to give to two different organizations within their community,” said Linda Arnold, Monsanto’s Customer Advocacy Lead.

Of the 1,271 corn, soybean and cotton counties in which the program is conducted, Arnold tells Brownfield 1,000 of those counties were touched by the drought. She says the America’s Farmers Grow Communities program does good where winners feel it’s needed most.

“The past three years our number one recipient has been fire departments and rescue units, which kind of makes sense with a lot volunteer firemen out there being farmers as well as the need for that for their business,” said Arnold.

Close behind, said Arnold, many FFA chapters and 4-H clubs have benefited. So far, $7 million has been awarded, but by the time the expanded awards are doled out this year, that figure will be closer to $13 million, according to Arnold.  The deadline to enter is November 30.
