Nebraska wheat shows some improvement

The condition rating of Nebraska’s winter wheat crop improved in the past week.

The latest crop report rates the wheat crop at 15 percent good to excellent, 43 percent fair and 42 percent poor to very poor.  One week ago, 49 percent of the crop was called poor to very poor.

Light precipitation last week in the form of rain across the eastern third of the state and as snow in the Panhandle was helpful.  However, moisture accumulations were often less than a quarter inch, with many southwestern and south central countries largely missed.

Statewide, corn harvest was near completion.  Remaining acres were in western counties where producers continued to deal with the effects of high winds which downed corn nearly a month ago.

Sorghum harvest was 99 percent complete, well ahead of the 73 average.
