Lawmakers want GAO study of school lunch regs

Three Republican lawmakers have requested a government study of the new USDA school lunch standards that went into effect this school year. South Dakota Congresswoman Kristi Noem and Tennessee Congressman Phil Roe, a physician, have joined House Education and Workforce Committee Chair John Kline of Minnesota in asking for a Government Accountability Office (GAO) study, expressing concern about the new calorie limits, the costs of the program, and food waste.

In their letter to the GAO, the lawmakers say parents and schools are concerned that not all students’ calorie needs are being met and with school breakfast program requirements going into effect next year, that may make it worse. Plus, they say, the program lacks flexibility for schools to meet their student’s needs.

Noem had raised concerns in a letter to Ag Secretary TomVilsack in September and in a letter with Congressman Roe requesting more information on the program last month. Her office said Wednesday, there had been no response yet from the USDA.
