Soybean harvest okay, too wet for wheat

A Missouri soybean grower says he’s looking at a fairly decent harvest in this year of drought. With rains that started Labor Day weekend and the recent rains, Warren Stemme says his crop perked up some.

“If things hold out the way they are we’ll be close to an average crop which is kind of in the mid-40s for us. We’re thankful that we spent some time and due diligence choosing the right varieties and placing them in the right fields and farms.”

But the more recent rains, he tells Brownfield, have slowed down his planting of wheat, “We are in the process of planting wheat and we’re actually a little wet here right now so we’re hoping some of this rain predicted for this weekend will miss us.”

In the big picture, though, he says the rain is a welcome sight.  Stemme says, “We are glad to see some replenishment of the subsoil moisture and hopefully we’ll have a little bit better moisture situation next year.”  Stemme farms in the river bottoms of St. Louis County, Missouri.
