JBS will restart Canadian meat plant Monday

JBS-USA says the former XL Foods plant in Brooks, Alberta will fire-up on Monday. The plant has been shut down since September 27th as the result of the largest beef recall in Canadian history.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has run extensive testing at the plant to make sure the corrective measures taken have worked…they have. Additional CFIA inspectors will be at the plant while it’s operating. JBS USA has taken over management of the facility and all products coming out of the plant will carry the JBS label. Bill Rupp, CEO of JBS USA stressed that food safety and rebuilding consumer confidence is a top priority at the facility. He says the plant will start out slowly and hopefully get back up to full capacity of processing 4,000 carcasses per day in a few weeks.

Under the deal, JBS has an option to buy the plant, Rupp says they intend to complete the acquisition.
