Good week for cash cheese

A strong finish for the cash cheese market on Friday, barrels gained 2 cents to close at @2.08 and blocks increased 3 cents to $2.12 on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. There were 7 loads sold, 2 bids unfilled and 2 offers uncovered. Cash butter held steady at $1.89 with 1 uncovered offer.

For the week, cash cheese barrels up 16.25 cents, blocks gained 12 cents, butter up a penny. Class III futures are mixed. Dairy Market News says while milk production is increasing along seasonal trends it is below year-ago levels in most areas. Increased culling is given as the reason especially in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

Dairy cow slaughter in September totaled 251,000 head, down 24,000 from August but 4,000 more than sent to market in September of 2011. Year-to-date 2.288 million dairy cows have been slaughtered under federal inspection compared to 2.1557 million last year.
