California’s GMO labeling proposal losing favor

Public support for California’s ballot measure to label genetically engineered foods–Proposition 37—is falling fast.

The latest poll shows 44 percent of surveyed voters back the initiative and 42 percent oppose it.  In mid-September 61 percent favored Prop 37 with 25 percent opposed.

Television ads against the initiative are being credited for the shift.  Monsanto, Coca-Cola, Pepsico and Nestle USA are all part of the opposition campaign.

Several major newspapers in California have also printed editorials criticizing the proposal.  While not necessarily opposing the labeling of GMO foods, most agree that Prop 37 is poorly written.
