Healthy bacteria live in the gut – they assist with good digestion and digestive balance. When those get out of whack, it is suggested that we try probiotics – things like yogurt and kefir (a fermented milk drink), supplements, all with “live and active cultures.” Those may increase the amount of healthy bacteria (or flora) in the intestines. Prebiotics are an emerging food and supplement category – described by the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics as a selectively fermented ingredient. Prebiotics are what probiotics feed on.
