Rain slows harvest in Ohio

Corn harvest in Ohio has reached 22 percent complete, ahead of both last year and the 5-year average. As of Sunday, October 7, 49 percent of the Ohio corn crop was in fair-to-good condition, 50 percent of the crop was rated in poor-to-very poor condition.

The Ohio field office of the National Ag Statistics Service (NASS) reports soybean harvest in Ohio is 23 complete, that’s a nine point improvement from a week ago. 66 percent of the soybeans are rated fair-to-good, while 27 percent are in the poor, to very poor category.

Rain has slowed winter wheat seeding, the latest weekly crop and weather report has 19 percent planted, which is ahead of last year, but 13 percent behind the 5-year average of 32 percent. Just two percent of the wheat crop has emerged.

Topsoil moisture in Ohio rated 28 percent short to very short, 63 percent adequate and 9 percent surplus.

Other Ohio crops:

Fall and winter apple harvest is 72 percent complete, nine points ahead of the 5-year average.

Grape harvest is 79 percent complete, 14 points ahead of averge.

Processing tomato harvest is 98 percent complete.
