OSU judging team wins Keystone

For the first time since 2004, the Ohio State University Livestock Judging Team won the Keystone International Livestock Exposition Collegiate Livestock Judging contest this past weekend.

Judging team coach Kyle Culp credits the hard work and dedication of the team for their success.

“We go to that contest and we’re the only team where all the students score over 900 points,” said Culp. “I think that’s something that’s really impressive as well.”

In addition winning the contest, the OSU team placed first in the sheep division, third in reasons, the swine division and fourth in the beef division.

Individual honors included: Audrey Neal of Tiffin, sixth overall and second in sheep; Trey Miller of Baltimore, Ohio placed eighth overall and first in sheep; Nate Benich of Plymouth, Ohio was tenth overall and in sheep; Linsey Howell of Danville, Ohio placed ninth overall.

Culp says if there is an area where the judging team still needs some work it would be in reasons.

“Simply describing each animal as correctly, or accurately as possible,” Culp said. “So we’re going to a lot more one-on-one evaluation, as far as just judging animals individually as opposed to worrying about placing classes.”

The OSU Livestock Judging team will be at the Stockman in Auburn Indiana, which is an individual competition and then to Kansas City for the American Royal.
