Illinois soybeans don’t entirely escape frost damage

Harvest continued last week in Illinois with a few delays from light rain. Topsoil moisture is now 50 percent adequate to surplus. Corn harvest is just about done; 80 percent complete. Normally only about 45 percent would be out of the field by now. The soybean harvest is 47 percent done, the normal is 42 percent harvested by this time. Farmers reported frost damage to soybeans late in the week.

Thirty percent of the winter wheat crop is planted and four percent has emerged. The third cutting of alfalfa is 96 percent complete. Illinois pastures are now 23 percent good to excellent.
