Frost ends Nebraska’s growing season

A killing frost over the weekend brought Nebraska’s growing season to an end. There was even snow in western Nebraska. Corn harvest is two-thirds complete, a month ahead of average. Soybean harvest is over 70 percent complete, near two weeks ahead of average. Winter wheat seeding is over 80 percent complete.

Ninety-seven percent of the state’s pastures are in poor or very poor. Cattle are eating stalks and producers continue seeking forage.

Some areas of Nebraska had light precipitation, but generally less than a half-inch.

The corn harvest is 67 percent done, 30 days ahead of normal.

Soybeans are 71 percent harvested, 13 days ahead of normal. The soybean crop is only 20 percent good to excellent.

Winter wheat is 81 percent seeded, which is a little behind average.

The fourth cutting of alfalfa is 90 percent complete.
