Disease is not an issue – in some places

This year’s drought left farmers concerned about disease issues in the field – and rightfully so.  Eastern Indiana farmer David Lowe says they’ve been lucky this year – and have not seen a lot of disease pressure.  “As far as the blights and aflatoxins,” he says, “We haven’t had an issue there, yet.”

Purdue Extension corn specialist Bob Nielsen says it simply depends on where the farm is located.  “The frequency of aflatoxin issues this year is higher – and that is to be expected,” he says.  “There are areas and pockets of the state where it (aflatoxin) is very prevalent – however, there are just as many areas of the state where there are essentially no molds present.”

Nielsen says they had hoped the aflatoxin issue would not be come epidemic.  At this point – he says it doesn’t seem like it has.
