Illinois to assist in nitrate level testing in soil

This year’s drought raises questions and concerns about the amount of nitrogen that remains in the soil.  Because of those concerns, the Illinois Council on Best Management Practices (CBMP) and the University of Illinois are partnering to inventory soil nitrate levels in Illinois.

Dan Schaefer, director of nutrient stewardship for CBMP says this program is tied directly to their Keep it for the Crop program.  The emphasis is on fields that will return to corn in 2013.

CBMP is asking ag retailers and certified crop advisors to collect soil samples.  They will fund the soil sample shipping and analysis costs and will share the results with those collecting the sample.
