How bad is the aflatoxin issue?

Weather conditions during this year’s growing season created the perfect environment for the development of aflatoxin in corn.  Bob Nielsen, Purdue extension corn specialist says the frequency of aflatoxin issues this year is higher.  “We knew the red flag was there and were certainly hopeful it wouldn’t’ become epidemic,” he says.  “I can venture to say aflatoxin has not become and epidemic.  However – I will say there are pockets of the state where it is very prevalent.”

On the same token, Nielsen notes there are equal pockets of the state where there are essentially no molds present.  He says the fact that the aflatoxin issue didn’t become as bad as they feared this year has been a pleasant surprise.
