GMO labeling effort underway in Washington state

An initiative that would require the labeling of foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has been launched in Washington state.

Observers say the initiative effort, called I-522, is very similar to what is taking place in California with Prop 37.  Prop 37, which would require GMO labels on certain foods and beverages, will be on the California ballot in November.

The I-522 initiative effort was launched after the Washington state legislature failed to advance a GMO labeling bill earlier this year.  Supporters of I-522 need to collect about 250-thousand signatures by the end of the year to force the legislature to reconsider the matter.

If the legislature again fails to act, the initiative would go before voters in November of 2013.
