Matt Roberts, Extension ag economist at The Ohio State University talked with several farmers at Farm Science Review last week that over marketed and were wondering what to do.
Roberts says to first acknowledge it happened and second don’t try to be fancy or over think the situation.
“If the buyer will give you the option to roll to 2013, I know that’s going to cost you probably $1.50 per bushel that you roll forward, honestly that’s going to be your best option,” said Roberts. “In a year like this, this is not a year to play double or nothing, this is a year to fold your hand, move on and let’s turn to 2013.”
Roberts adds that it’s also important to not let what happened in 2012 influence a decision to move away from early marketing.
