In recent years, many areas of Nebraska have seen significant declines in groundwater levels. In response, some of the state’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) have established pumping restrictions for irrigation water.
One of those is the Middle Republican NRD, which covers a portion of southwest Nebraska.
Joe Anderjaska serves on the Middle Republican NRD board of directors and is also chairman of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts. Anderjaska says water usage in the Middle Republican NRD is now about half of what it was just a decade ago. But he says irrigators have adapted to the reduced water allocations.
We visited with Anderjaska at the recent Husker Harvest Days farm show near Grand Island, Nebraska.
