Missouri’s corn harvest so far

About one-third of Missouri’s corn crop has been harvested, well ahead of last year.  With the drought’s effect on the crop, it’s not all being harvested for grain. The Missouri Corn Merchandising Council’s vice president of operations and grower services Gary Wheeler says it’s hard to tell how much is coming out of the fields for grain and how much for sileage. Yields are all over the board, too. One thing he knows for sure is that aflatoxin is not a big problem. Wheeler tells Brownfield Ag News, “Thankfully, we have not heard (reports) or any mention of any large amounts of aflatoxin at this point.”

In talking with technology and seed companies, Wheeler says, they believe there’s going to be enough seed corn for next year.

Wheeler says, “We really don’t have any issues at this point. We might have a little issue in what we would call our southern states due to some of the drought and how they actually raise the seed corn. But as for Missouri, we should be looking pretty good.”

As for this year’s harvest, he says they won’t know what they really have in the bins until January and what the market’s going to do.
