Dena Jones with the Animal Welfare Institute says the USDA does require producers to submit affidavits to support their use of food labels that say things such as “cage free, free range, grass fed, pasture raised, no hormones added, or, raised without antibiotics” but she says those are often unverified claims. Jones says consumers would likely be surprised to learn those labels aren’t necessarily a sure thing.
