Pacelle, part 1: His ‘beef’ with NCBA

On Monday, August 13, Brownfield conducted a wide-ranging discussion of issues with the controversial head of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Wayne Pacelle.

In part one of the three part interview, Pacelle is questioned about HSUS’ alliance with the Organization for Competitive Markets (OCM) and its backing of a lawsuit against the beef checkoff.

Pacelle says the reason group supports the lawsuit is because of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s  (NCBA) opposition to the so-called “egg bill” in Congress.

He also issues what sounds like a warning to NCBA.

“We hope that the cattle industry stays in its lane and doesn’t continue to subvert the work of the egg industry to adopt progressive reforms that are good for the industry and align it better with consumer attitudes.”

Pacelle was also asked if this action signals a new battle front for HSUS against the cattle industry and what issues he has with the way cattle are raised and beef is produced.

The thing that infuriates me the most is that those are my damn check off dollars. I work my *** off and Wayne and the hsus has no business telling the NCBA what to do with them. I believe their doing what’s best for the beef producer and industry.
