When auctioneer Johnny Regula sold the final animal in the 45th Ohio State Fair Sale of Champions on Sunday, 7 new records were set and the sale totaled $329,550. But even more important, of the sale total, the Youth Reserve Program added $249,550, bringing its total since it was started in 1995 to more than $2 million. Something State Fair General Manager Virgil Strickler is very proud of.
“We started this program to make sure more youth got money they could take back home and maybe buy more livestock or they could further their education,” said Strickler.

There were a number of familiar buyers at the Sale of Champions, Kroger, Meijer, Bob Evans, the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, Steve Rauch, J.D. Equipment, Cooper Farms, S & S Volvo, Kale Marketing, but the list of buyers included also included a new buyer in 2012, A.G.Boogher and Son of Santa Fe, Ohio.
“Going through bidding is just like going through bidding at the county fair, you never know if you’re going to end up with the highest bid or not,” said Boogher. “When we got the highest bid it felt good about the kids getting additional money for scholarships and everything, which is a good thing, I do a lot of projects to support the kids.”

A return buyer to the Sale of Champions was Todd Schaub with S & S Volvo at Lima.
“We support a lot of different county fair sales, historically we hadn’t come to the Ohio State Fair Sale of Champions, but Danielle Heintz is the granddaughter and daughter of very good customers and friends of mine, so we came down three years ago for the first time and found out what a fantastic experience it was, I mean it was just really exciting,” said Schaub. “We’ve been back ever since.”
