Speaking up for agriculture
When it comes to using “social media” to tell agriculture’s story, Larry Sailer of Iowa Falls, Iowa is probably about as active as anyone in the country.
Sailer uses Facebook, Twitter and blogging to help convey positive messages about agriculture. He also does a lot of public speaking and participates in the Farm Bureau’s and National Pork Producers Council’s speaker corps programs.
At the recent Iowa Farm Bureau Economic Conference in Ames, we visited with Sailer about his communications efforts. In that interview, Sailer shared an especially frustrating experience that he had recently as a participant in an “animal welfare” discussion coordinated by The Huffington Post.

I have heard of this tactic being used before by animal rights groups. Please make no mistake about it, I am sure that animal welfare was little adressed by the other speakers. They call it animal welfare rather than animal rights as no more than a slight of hand trick.
We love Larry Sailer! He’s one of our speakers at the State of Now: AgIowa on August 17 (http://140conf.com/AgIowa) just because he tells the truth, and his voice is the average man’s voice.
