Vilsack message is “Farm Bill Now”

U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says there’s nothing more important to Rural America than the passage of the Farm Bill. At the Iowa Farm Bureau Economic Summit, Vilsack said House leaders tell him there may not be time in the calendar to get it done.

“I will tell you that last week the House of Representatives left a day early because they didn’t have enough to do. There is no excuse for not getting this on the board, up and passed,” said Vilsack.

The Farm Bill approved by the House Ag Committee has not been scheduled for debate by the full House.

Sporting a button that says “Farm Bill Now”, Vilsack urged farmers to encourage their congressional leaders to get the bill on the floor and work out the differences with the Senate Farm Bill as soon as possible.

“This is ONE opportunity, ONE opportunity,” he stressed, “Where there IS potential for bipartisan work; ONE opportunity to say to the country, ‘the system still works.’ And, ONE opportunity to make sure that those good, hard working farm families out there who need a little help know that the folks that they elected are going to help.”

Vilsack says the government’s capacity to respond to the drought is somewhat limited due to the lack of disaster programs because of the lack of a new farm bill. He says America’s farmers and ranchers deserve the certainty a new farm bill will provide.
