USDA Under Sec. sees drought impact

UDSA Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services, Michael Scuse was in Paulding County Ohio on Tuesday, July 17, where he visited three farms.

The Under Secretary saw crops devastated by the drought, and then to rub salt in the wound, he saw the results of a strong storm at the end of June, including hail damage to crops and wind damage to farm buildings.

“My heart goes out to all of the farmers,” said Scuse. “I know what they’ve gone through to get a crop in a field and I know how much it costs to get a crop planted, so my heart goes out to all producers for their losses they’re incurring right now.”

The Under Secretary tells Brownfield that from the information he picked up in Paulding County and from visits in Michigan on Monday, July 16, USDA will be able to look for ways to make farm programs more efficient.

“We are on these tours to visit with these families so that we can gather information about our programs, what changes we need to make to provide better assistance,” the Under Secretary said.

Under Secretary Scuse will be in Indiana on Wednesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 19, conducting similar farm visits.
