House delays ag bills

It looks like the House may have kicked the farm bill a little further down the road. As the Senate was wrapping-up their version of the bill on Thursday, House leadership announced they were going to take up the ag appropriations bill the week of June 25th and go at the farm bill upon return from the July 4th recess. POLITICO reports those plans have changed, Majority Leader Eric Cantor has scheduled the transportation appropriations bill first making it unlikely the ag appropriations bill will make it to the floor before the recess.

There is some doubt that the House leadership wants to move the farm bill yet this year, Cantor’s office denies that but does admit they were taken by surprise with the Senate’s fast action.

Meanwhile, House Ag Committee Chair Frank Lucas says no matter how things play out next week, his committee will mark up the farm bill on July 11th.
