Last year Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance launched a program in Posey County to help deter copper wire theft from irrigation pivots. Today they announced a similar program for Jasper County. Jim Rink, with Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance says they have noticed an increase in copper wire thefts in that area. “Every time someone steals copper wiring from one of our farmers,” he says, “it costs around $10,000 to replace one span of wiring.”
Rink says an alarm system will be installed on the pivot. He explains what happens when it is compromised. “The alarm system calls the farmer and the local sheriff and from there the sheriff is asked to go and investigate what has triggered the alarm system,” he says.
Rink tells Brownfield the program is available to Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance clients. He says if they install the theft deterrent system on all of their pivots they are eligible for a 5 percent discount on their entire farm premium.
