Naturally occurring sugars are generally a freebie – like those in fruit and milk. Nutritionists don’t tell us to limit those but they do remind us that sweeteners added to foods are the ones we need to limit. There are more than 20 different types of sweeteners, naturally occurring and added. Added Sugars are considered empty calories – offering no nutritional benefits. Too much sugar is linked to tooth decay but its role in overall health is more complex. We talked with Marianne Smith Edge with the International Food Information Council.
