Cracker Barrel announces plans to move stall free

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store is the latest in restaurant chains to announce it will begin formulating plans to purchase pork from suppliers that do not use gestation stalls.  Vance Fouraker, Cracker Barrel’s vice-president of strategic sourcing says, “We’re seeing an evolution in Americans’ awareness and attitudes regarding meat produced with higher animal welfare in mind.”  He adds “We recognize that gestation crates may not be the best method to meet higher animal welfare goals and are committed to evolving to sustainable alternatives.”

Cracker Barrel joins six other food companies that have announced moves toward gestation stall free supply chains.

  • So Cracker Barrel is falling in line with all the other marketers that have no clue how to manage livestock.

When will it stop? when food costs are so high none of us will be able to afford to eat!!

  • I feel it is the consumers right to say what he’ll buy. Whe a person goes to buy any product from a bolt to a vehicle he has a choice. That’s what this country is built on. If he can’t find it then the purchaser decides again. Don’t throw out these whining scare statements that food price will soar out of sight. If a producer wants to fill the need let him do it. The American pork producer adapts, alsways has. I’ve been a pork producer for 40 years, seen a lot of changes. It is still about choices and it should be. The pendulum swings from one extreme to the other, just like in a year commodity hog market will be a blood bath from the massive expansion. So, if a purchaser wants a certain product let someone provide it to him.
