SE Illinois winter wheat harvest earliest ever

Martin Barbre didn’t get in all of the winter wheat that he intended last fall, but he doesn’t seem too worked up about it. On a brief break from harvesting his winter-planted crop, near Carmi, Illinois, Barbre talked about how harvest is going and about how the wheat crop is doing. “It’s the earliest we’ve ever cut wheat, by at least a week,” Barbre told Brownfield’s Julie Harker from his field. The fact that he’s able to harvest this early is, in itself, a good thing. “It is if we get some rain in here before too long,” he said. “We’re beginning to hurt; we’re pretty dry.” In spite of that, Barbre’s yields are running from 70 to 80 bushels per acre, and the test weights are at 62. “Test weight’s the best we’ve ever had.”
