June is Ohio Wine Month
June is now Ohio Wine Month, a time to celebrate Ohio’s wine industry, which Dave Daniels, Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture says is a significant contributor to Ohio’s agricultural economy.
“We have 162 wineries, producing almost a million gallons, a little better than a million gallons of wine a year,” said Director Daniels. “It actually puts a great deal of money in to the economy, around $580 million dollars every year.”

As part of the Wine Month kickoff event, Christy Eckstein, Executive Director of the Ohio Grape Industries Committee says a new magazine, “Exploring Ohio Wine Country,” will help consumers learn more about Ohio’s wine industry.
“It’s a 40 page, 4-color, glossy publication with the Ohio Wine Guide inserted in the middle,” Eckstein said. “Lots of editorial information about visiting Ohio’s wineries, advertisements so the consumer can actually see where these wineries are and what they have to offer.”

Exploring Ohio’s Wine Country is available statewide at AAA offices, Giant Eagle stores, wineries or by emailing the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
I love the higher acidity found in Ohio wines. Great to pair the high acidity in a dish such as lemon chicken with one of the wines form Ohio. Ohio wine industry is really growing 162 wineries, two years ago there were around 132. Great wine state.
We also have a website up now in our efforts to fight the duplicitous and unnecessary over regulation by the Ohio Department of Agriculture (Food Safety Division); http://www.freethewineries.com
It seems in their zeal to feed off a growing industry (but not growing as fast as in other states) they will over regulate and in the long run will stunt the Ohio wine induatry. Wine has never had a food safety issue in Ohio that we can find. This is in the early stages of killing our wineries growth potential.
