96% of U.S. corn, 76% of soybeans planted

USDA reports corn planting has nearly wrapped up nationally.

As of Sunday, 96% of this year’s expected record corn crop is planted, compared to 75% a year ago and the five year average of 81%. Out of the 18 top producing states, only Tennessee has officially completed activity but a number of states are at 98% to 99%, with Pennsylvania the slowest at 75%. 76% of the crop has emerged, compared to 38% this time last year and 48% on average, and in the first rating of the season, 77% of corn is in good to excellent shape, with 20% called fair and 3% poor to very poor.

76% of soybeans are planted, compared to 35% a year ago and 42% on average, with 35% emerged, compared to 10% last year and 13% on average.

79% of the winter wheat crop has headed, compared to 59% both last year and on average, with 3% harvested, compared to 1% a year ago. 58% of winter wheat is in good to excellent condition, down 2% on the week but up 26% on the year.

99% of spring wheat is planted, compared to 50% a year ago and 78% on average, with 86% emerged, compared to 21% last year and 50% on average. In its’ first rating of the season, 74% of spring wheat is called good to excellent with 21% fair and 5% poor to very poor.

51% of U.S. pastures and rangelands are in good to excellent condition, 3% less than last week and 3% below this time last year.
