Missouri farmer planting after ’11 flood

One of several prominent farmer voices during and after the Missouri River flood of 2011 says planting this spring is “rolling along.”

Richard Oswald – who farms in northwest Missouri’s Atchison County and whose farm and home were under water for several months last spring and summer – tells Brownfield that much of his corn is planted and soybeans are going in.

He says levees are repaired although other flood repairs to some roads are still going on.

Sand in the fields is still a problem. While he has sand that is four to five inches deep on some of his fields, he has neighbors with four to five FEET of sand. Oswald says those sandy fields are not likely to get close to normal until next year. Finding a place to put all the sand, he adds, is one reason why.
