Black cutworm alert in Illinois

Growers are urged to scout now for signs of leaf feeding and cutting by black cutworms on their emerging corn seedlings. Kelly Estes, coordinator of the Illinois Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey, says increasing flights of moths in late March and early April could cause a “significant presence of cutting-stage larvae in many areas of the state in the coming weeks.”

Potential cutting dates can be calculated using reports of intense captures and temperature data.

More information about the black cutworm and scouting procedures is here.
