BSE cow offspring is found, tests negative

USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has located an offspring from that BSE-positive dairy cow found in California last week. The animal was in another state; it was humanely euthanized and sampled for BSE at the National Vet Lab in Ames, Iowa. The test was negative.

APHIS has also determined the cow also had a stillborn calf within the last two years, no word as to how the carcass was disposed of. No birth cohort cattle have been located.

A hold order has been placed on all cattle at a second dairy farm that is associated with the dairy of the initial positive cow. Both dairies remain under quarantine. Inventories of both dairies have been completed by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
