Indiana is off to a record pace

A week of favorable weather allowed Indiana farmers to make significant progress planting the 2012 corn corp.  Twenty-four percent of the intended corn acreage has been planted compared to 2 percent last year and the 5-year average.  By area – 16 percent of the crop has been planted in the north, 26 percent in the central region, and 33 percent in the south.  Just 3 percent of the corn crop has emerged.  Five percent of Indiana’s soybean crop has been planted.

The winter wheat crop is well ahead of last year as 57 percent is jointed compared to 19 percent a year ago and 9 percent of the crop has headed.  Winter wheat condition is rated 79 percent good to excellent compared to 58 percent a year ago.

Seventy-seven percent of pastures are rated good to excellent compared to 43 percent last year at this time.
