3% of U.S. corn crop planted

USDA’s first national crop progress report of 2012 shows a slightly faster than a year ago corn planting pace.

As of Sunday, April 2, 3% of the U.S. corn crop is planted, compared to 2% both a year ago and for the five year average. Texas is at 45% planted followed by Tennessee at 15% and North Carolina at 10%. Missouri is at 7%, Illinois is at 5%, and Indiana, Nebraska, and Ohio are all at 1%.

8% of the spring wheat crop is planted, compared to 1% this time last year and the five year average of 2%. South Dakota is the furthest along at 25%.

58% of winter wheat is rated good to excellent, with 30% called fair, and 12% in the poor to very poor category. A year ago, 37% of the crop was good to excellent with 31% fair, and 32% poor to very poor.
