Wendy’s wants phase-out of gestation stalls

Fast food chain Wendy’s has announced that it will require its U.S. and Canadian pork suppliers to outline plans to phase out the use of sow gestation stalls.

In a statement on its web site, Wendy’s says that confining sows in gestation stalls is not sustainable over the long term and that “moving away from this practice is the right thing to do.”

The president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, Wayne Pacelle, praised the move, saying it “provides further evidence that we are on the pathway toward ending this inhumane practice once and for all.”

  • The Wendy’s press release was much better than McDonalds’ announcement, which included the HSUS logo. Wendy’s has been addressing animal welfare issues for a long time, with actual experts in the field. Temple Grandin, not Pacelle, is quoted in the press release. A few years ago, before the secret deal with UEP, HSUS launched a campaign to flood Wendy’s phones with complaints for not going cage-free. I’m sure the McDonald’s decision to work towards a phase out of gestation crates influenced the Wendys move. Healthy competition is fine. Taking credit for this move by Wendys, as Pacelle typically does, is not fine. Nor is suing over sandwiches and pretending to be an expert when you are really a politician in charitable disguise.
