“The era of direct payments is over”

Senate Ag Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow says the “era of direct payments is over” for U.S. farmers. Speaking at a committee farm bill hearing Thursday, the Michigan Democrat said farm policy should focus on crop insurance and other tools that help producers who have suffered a loss on crops they actually grow. Stabenow told the committee strengthening and expanding crop insurance programs will be one of her priorities in the next farm bill saying, “It is absolutely imperative that we get these policies right.”
