The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association recently held their annual meeting in Nashville, TN. Joe Moore, Executive Vice President of the Indiana Beef Cattle Association says one figure that jumps out at him is the size of the cattle heard in the United States. In fact – he says those figures the lowest they’ve been in over 60 years.
In 1950 there were around 90 million cattle in the US and even though the actual number of animals may be the same as they were in 1950, Moore says beef producers are supplying about 550 pounds per animal compared to the 208 pounds per animal produced in 1950. He tells Brownfield producers have done an incredible job meeting the demands of an increasing population at a time when meat exports are at record levels.
With the cattle numbers where they are currently, Moore says consumers could feel a slight pinch at the grocery store.
