Indiana leads the way in conservation

According to Natural Resource Conservation Service Chief Dave White, “conservation just works”.  And for farmers in Indiana – it works well.  “Indiana is leading the way for the nation in the whole soil health arena,” he says.  “We have more cover crops in Indiana than the rest of the country, combined.”

NRCS Chief White says it wouldn’t be possible without those involved with the conservation districts.  “Quite frankly,” he says, “This is farmer led.”  “There is a solid core of farmers who have figured this out.”

Chief White tells Brownfield the conservation movement always comes back to its roots.  “What I’ve learned from Indiana,” he says, “If we want to do stuff for wildlife, if we want to do stuff for water quality, we’ve GOT to do stuff for our soil.”  White says it all begins with soil health.  “A producer can increase their production, lower their input cost and take care of the environment.  It’s like a triple win.”

NRCS Chief Dave White spoke at this past week’s Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts annual conference in Indianapolis.
