First it was Julia, now its Jordyn’s turn

25 years ago Julia Wickard, then Julia Brown, showed cattle in the very first Hoosier Beef Congress.

“I was, I was 15 years old and this is a pretty special place, a very special place in my heart having worked for the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, but also having grown up in the livestock industry, raising beef cattle,” said Wickard.

Now 25 years later it was Julia’s 8 year old daughter Jordyn’s time to show at the Hoosier Beef Congress. I asked Jordyn what mom and dad shared with her to prepare her for the show ring.

“They have worked with me, they have washed my cows with me, they have walked with me,” Jordyn said.

And watching Jordyn walk in the showring with her steer at the Hoosier Beef Congress, well, it was harder than Julia ever imagined.

“Because her steer wasn’t behaving as we all wanted him to, but thinking about her little 55 pound body against the 780 pound steer that she was wielding around the ring made me a little nervous,” Julia said. “But we made it through and I’m awfully proud of her.”
