Nebraska’s governor continues criticism of HSUS

In a conference call with reporters Monday, Nebraska governor Dave Heineman continued his harsh criticism of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

“We don’t trust HSUS—we don’t respect them.  No deal, no compromise. If they want come to Nebraska, we’re going to fight them every step of the way,” Heineman says.

“They want to destroy the number one industry in this state—and I’m not going to let them do it.”

HSUS has denied that it intends to pursue a farm animal welfare ballot initiative in Nebraska, although the organization has become much more active in the state in recent months.  It hired a state director in 2010 and recently formed an alliance with Nebraska Farmers Union to create a livestock advisory council in the state.

The president of the Nebraska farm coalition We Support Agriculture, Pete McClymont, says, no matter what HSUS does, his group will continue its efforts to inform and educate Nebraskans about the positive aspects of modern agriculture.

“They’ve let us know that we’re creating a stir out here that doesn’t need to be created,” McClymont says, “and their comments are ‘we’re not coming in 2012’. Well, they don’t quantify it beyond 2012.

“Whatever they do, our mission doesn’t change—and that is to educate, to make people aware of all of the great things that ag producers do in the state of Nebraska.”
