Iowa Farm Bureau rejects conservation/insurance link

Iowa Farm Bureau delegates, at their summer policy conference, have said ‘no’ to linking conservation compliance with federal crop insurance.

Iowa Farm Bureau president Craig Lang says the issue generated considerable debate.

“In the end, what happened was that we—our delegates—chose not to tie or link crop insurance and compliance because they thought there were other things that could do that—like the ACRE program or some other mechanism,” Lang says, “but they didn’t define what that mechanism was.”

The idea of making federal crop insurance subject to conservation compliance is expected to garner much more attention in coming months.  That’s because direct payments—the big “carrot” for conservation compliance—are likely to be eliminated by a budget-sensitive Congress.
