Two more Wisconsin horses with EEE

Two more Wisconsin horses have tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture says lab tests confirmed a seven-year-old quarter-horse in Price County and a six-year-old Belgian mare in Taylor County had the disease. Neither had been vaccinated for EEE. State Veterinarian Dr. Bob Ehlenfeldt says EEE has a mortality rate in excess of 90 percent and stresses the need to vaccinate horses.

The virus is spread by mosquitoes and Ehlenfeldt says there is a big crop of mosquitoes this year.

Earlier this month DATCP reported two llamas and a horse in Dunn County were diagnosed with the disease. Ehlenfeldt cautions “if we’ve found EEE in these three counties, it’s reasonable to assume it’s more widespread. Unless we have a really early killing frost, we still have a lot of mosquito season ahead of us.”

These horse should have had their vaccinations and then this would not have happened. There is no excuse for not having the proper vaccinations.
