Thursday midday cash livestock markets

There is not a lot of action in cattle country so far on Thursday. There was a light to moderate trade yesterday. In the North majors paid mostly 175.00 on a dressed basis, $8.00 to 9.00 lower than last week and regional’s paid up to 180.00. It sounds like buyers in the Eastern part of Nebraska may have all the cattle they want for now. Live sales in Kansas and Texas brought mostly 108.00, $4.00 lower than last week. Some sources are telling DTN that business in Kansas and Texas could essentially be done for the week. Cattle left on the show lists are priced around 109.00 live and 177.00 plus on a dressed basis.

Choice boxed beef at midday is down 1.82 at 175.57, and the select is up.24 at 172.64.

Feeder cattle receipts at the hub City Livestock Auction a t Aberdeen, SD totaled 2568 head. Compared to last week feeder steers sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower. Feeder heifers were 1.00 lower. It was an active market with moderate demand. Feeder steers medium and large 1 averaging 830 pounds brought 126.84. Replacement heifers weighing 835 lbs traded at an average of 117.42 per hundredweight.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade opened 4.04 higher at 96.38 on a carcass basis, the West is up 4.13 at 96.31, and the east is down .48 at 90.66. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 84.00 to 86.00.

The pork carcass value really seems to be doing a decent job defending historical high ground. The cut-out bounced higher on Wednesday thanks to solid rib and belly strength, recovering about half of Tuesday’s sell-off from the record high notched on Monday.
